off-RCA is a nomadic curatorial platform working at the intersection of contemporary art, scent and design.
We curate artistic encounters with matter, place and sensory experience — through image, object, material, film, sound, scent and space.
We begin with encounters.
With a place.
A material.
A process.
A question.
Artists are invited to observe, research and translate through their own practice.
The outcome is not prescribed.
We create the conditions for the encounter, not the answer.

We move between disciplines and beyond conventional exhibition formats.

We are interested in what happens when perception is unsettled — when an image can be encountered through scent, when sound alters our experience of space, when matter reveals something of its origin, when one sense changes the way we experience another.

The senses do not operate in isolation.

Neither do we.

Art is the context.

The work begins with artistic enquiry, not illustration.
Each artist brings their own material, conceptual and perceptual language to the encounter.
Design gives form.
Design choreographs how the work is encountered — distance, sequence, scale, light, sound, material, movement and touch.
It creates the conditions through which perception unfolds.

Scent makes it bodily.

Invisible yet material, scent crosses the space between artwork and body.
It introduces proximity, memory, time and presence.
Together, art, scent and design create encounters that move beyond the eye alone.
Not multisensory for spectacle.
But sensory experience as another way of knowing.

OF PLACE AND MATTER

We are drawn to matter and what it carries.
Soil. Plant. Wood. Wax. Mineral. Fibre. Fruit. Flower.
And to transformation:
growing · harvesting · cutting · drying · heating · fermenting · distilling · extracting · preserving
Processes through which place, time, gesture and knowledge become embedded in material.
Through exhibitions, research-led projects and collaborations, off-RCA brings artistic practices into dialogue with places, makers, producers and materials.
A landscape may become an image.
A plant may become an extraction.
A gesture may become an object.
A scent may become colour, texture, movement or sound.
Translation moves between senses, materials and forms.
The artist translates the encounter.
off-RCA curates how it is experienced.
The audience encounters it through the body.

off-RCA takes form through exhibitions, collaborations, commissions and limited editions.
We are nomadic by design.
Projects may inhabit galleries, industrial spaces, landscapes, laboratories, cellars, temporary architectures and unexpected places.
The site is not simply where the work is shown.
It becomes part of how the work is experienced.

Exhibitions

We curate exhibitions that bring distinct artistic practices into conversation through material, sensory and conceptual relationships.
Rather than imposing a single language, we create conditions in which different works can coexist, intersect and alter one another.

Commissions

We develop research-led collaborations between artists, places, materials, makers and producers.
A commission may begin with a material, a process, a place or a question.
Artists are given space to encounter and interpret that starting point through their own practice, allowing the work to emerge through research rather than a predetermined aesthetic outcome.
Where projects are developed with commissioning partners, artist fees, research, production and presentation form part of the project framework.

Editions

Our editions emerge from artistic projects and collaborations.
They are not merchandise added afterwards.
They are works and objects born from the research and artistic process — allowing something of a material, an encounter or an exhibition to continue beyond its original place and time.

ORIGIN

off-RCA was founded by artist and curator Marie Camara following her MA at the Royal College of Art, London.
It grew from a network of international RCA artists into an independent curatorial platform working across art, scent and design.
Its collaborations continue to evolve across artistic disciplines, materials, places and forms of sensory experience.
The Royal College of Art remains part of our origin.
The “off” is where we go next.
We believe art can be encountered beyond the eye.
That matter contains histories.
That place can be experienced through more than geography.
That perception is bodily.
That the senses speak to one another.
And that artistic translation can reveal relationships we might otherwise miss.
We create the conditions for those encounters to happen.

But we go further.
We go off.

We step into what cannot be named — what must be felt.
We believe scent is art.
It is image in motion.
It is memory before language, emotion before thought.
In our curated exhibitions, scent becomes a narrative, a vibration, a synesthetic current that animates the visual, the tactile, and the spatial.
Our scents are stories. They are compositions of raw nature and raw emotion. They are invisible sculptures that connect the artwork to the soul.
Guided by the philosophies of Sontag, Bachelard, Berger, and Hegel — and by the image theory of Thomas Neal — we dissolve the boundaries between the disciplines. Photography becomes scent. Scent becomes architecture. Space becomes emotion.
Each edition is an immersive installation — a portal — curated with deep artistic rigour and emotional resonance.
We do not decorate walls.
We choreograph experiences.
We do not curate for the eye alone — but for memory, for desire, for breath, and for time.
Our vision is to grow off-RCA into the first multi-sensory art space where scent, sound, image, and atmosphere unite to create emotional landscapes that transcend medium, category, and expectation.
We invite you to inhale, to feel, to remember.
To experience art as vibration, transformation, and presence.
To step into the invisible, and emerge altered.
